Designing a Florida Friendly Landscape
Saturday, January 24, 2015 @ 10 am - FREE
Instructor: Mary Ann Parsons, Lee County Master Gardner
The concept of a Florida friendly landscape design is one that stresses the importance of protecting Florida's natural resources by conserving water, reducing waste and pollution, creating wildlife habitats and preventing erosion. Mary Ann Parsons has taught Florida friendly landscape design techniques for over 10 years. Mary Ann will discuss how to design a landscape that will require minimal maintenance and inputs such as irrigation, mowing, fertilization, and pesticides.
Not only are the Florida friendly landscaping principles good for the environment, but the plants considered 'Florida friendly' are fantastic, beautiful plants that everyone would appreciate having in their garden. This is the class for you if you are interested in creating a garden that, with minimal maintenance, will require less time, money, and effort. You will be rewarded with a delightful garden that provides fragrance, song birds, butterflies and beauty and the knowledge that you are being a better steward of your small piece of paradise.
Create a Vertical Garden
Saturday, January 31, 2015 @ 10am - FREE
Instructor: Robert Ashton, Robert's Garden Owner
This is a class for those who are looking for creative, inspirational ideas for their landscape designs. As the sizes of our urban home lots have shrunk, the concept of vertical gardening is an attractive gardening alternative for those with limited space. Vertical gardens are popular for their aesthetic qualities and their capacity to provide privacy and/or screening of unattractive features. They are also very useful in urban areas because they introduce the greenery necessary for air quality and quality of life.
There are many types of structures that can be used to support a vertical garden. Robert has created a series of attractive, specialized trellises, tuteurs and arbors that can withstand Florida's extreme climate. He will discuss how these structures can be incorporated into our landscapes and how to select plants that are adaptable to a narrow, vertical growth habit. His wonderful concepts and ideas will inspire and have you visualizing how to incorporate a vertical gardening feature into your landscape.
